Welcome to Bear Den 9

Den Number

Third Grade
      or 8-9 Yrs

Den Leader
     Joe Sposito
Our Goals   In the Bear Den, there are four general achievement groups: God, Country, Family, and Self. There are 120 achievement tasks and your Bear Cub must earn a certain number of achievements in each of the four groups to earn his Bear Badge.  This is the year your son will grow in amazing ways. After earning their Bear Badge, the scout may earn arrow points by completing additional achievement tasks.

Summary Much of the advancement for the Bear rank is done by the scout with his family outside of the den.  The parent signs off in the scout's handbook and the Den Leader records the advancements from the handbook in our tracking Software.  The Bear program relies heavily on family involvement, but you will see this gradually change with the scout doing more with his den and more individual direction as he graduates to Webelos.

Ready to join? Then you probably have some questions. Email the Den Leader at the link above and leave your phone number and we will get back with you as soon as possible.

What the Bears are "Doing"...
  • Fam Camp was a blast!
    Den 9 Parents,
I hope everyone had as much fun at FamCamp as we did!  If you have any pictures you'd like to share, please let me know.  The next District event is the Belt-Loop-A-Palooza on 8 November at Shalimar Methodist Church.  They're taking online registration only this year, so please sign up before all the slots are filled (http://www.gulfcoastcouncil.org/event/1572498).
Speaking of advancement, I've attached an excel file that I'll be using to track everyone's progress towards their Wolf rank (as well as arrow points and belt loops).  I'm sure it's incomplete.  Please take a moment to look over the list and compare it with your scout's accomplishments so far this year and let me know what updates I need to make.
This coming week's meeting will be an outdoor adventure at the Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park.  One of our activities will be creating an obstacle course.  In addition to the many possible obstacles the scouts could choose out there, I would like everyone to bring something of their own (ideas: hurdle a broom on 2 folding chairs, crawl through a tunnel, use chalk to draw a jump puzzle on the side walk, tie a rope swing, etc).

I'll be putting this info on the Den homepage

  • Kickball
    Den 9,
Kickball this weekend was great.  Don't forget that FamCamp is next weekend (17-19 Oct), so please register if you plan on attending (http://www.gulfcoastcouncil.org/event/1532098).

Erin and I will host this weekend's meeting at our house.  The goals will be the Books, Books, Books elective and the Reading and Writing belt loop.  In preparation for the next meeting, please have your scout:
-fill out the given diary (or one similar) and bring it to the next meeting ready to share
-go to the library, get a library card, and check out a book
-bring a favorite book to the den meeting ready to share

The calendar is filling up nicely.  I'm updating the website and I'll be sending out an updated .doc file later this week.
    See you Sunday!

  • Den 9 up and running!
I've started populating the Den 9 page.  For now, the content of my emails will be what I post.  Please feel free to add anything to the page if you would like.

I hope everyone who went to shooting sports day had a good time.  For those who haven't earned the BB gun and Archery belt loops, please let me know if you did it there.  If you haven't done it yet, don't worry because there will be another opportunity at Fall Fam Camp.  Also, there were a number of activities that went on that apply to the Wolf elective trail (walking on stilts, making up a game, tossing rings, etc.).  If your scout did any of those, please let me know.

Just a quick reminder about next weekend's meeting.  We'll get together on 5 Oct at Seminole Park to discuss belt loops, advancement, and then play some kickball!
